The comedic and ignorant comments are sickening to everyone, most importantly the families of those that died. We wish everyone would please keep the families affected by the tragic accident in their thoughts and prayers.

This isn’t a wild animal, the camel was not part of a petting zoo and despite animals rights comments which are the only ones the media has requested comment, Dromedary Camels only exist in captivity.other than the feral herds introduced into Australia in the 19th century. The news has sensationalized this story and made it into something that it isn’t. I have no knowledge of how the animal was let out. The animal was held in a breeding situation away from the public or visitors and used for breeding purposes along with other domestic livestock adjacent but not at the petting zoo open to the public each October. The animal in question, was never part of a “petting zoo”. We don’t stereotype these deaths as “rogue horses” or “wild cows” we simply accept news as accidents and move on from these accidents, each year. For example, horses kill on average 100 Americans each year and domestic cattle kill another 22 Americans on average each year in this country alone. That being said “experienced handler” fatalities or injuries are extremely rare but do happen. this is or should be known to the handler and accepted risk should be accepted well in advance. domestic livestock, vehicles, machinery, heavy equipment ect.

Anything that can weigh over a ton in weight can pose a danger to the handler ie. I emphasize the term “handlers” as most Americans will never handle or be in a situation to handle livestock, so the dangers that the animal can possess are normally limited to those that “handle” the livestock. The species was domesticated well before Christ, over 4,000 years ago being one of the first species to become domesticated under human care.ĭomestic livestock can be dangerous to handlers. These aren’t wild animals, they are domestic livestock no different than cattle and horses. We cannot send these animals back to the wild, as this doesn’t exist. No wild Dromedary Camel has existed in its native range for over 2,000 years. First off Dromedary Camels are domestic livestock, this is the only legal and factual basis for describing the species. Unfortunately, I too have read some of the millions of comments being posted on social media about the accident and I feel clarity is needed before people begin to stereotype the Dromedary Camel with no factual basis and only the ill informed opinions of others. We still don’t have all of the information, but apparently the animal was out of his enclosure and 2 men were apparently trying to get the animal back inside. We have to accept these risks when news negatively portrays this industry with no factual information, we must also stand up to false information! The tragic accident that happened in Obion County at Shirley Farms, a few days ago resulted in the death of 2 men by a Dromedary Camel. My life and the lives of my family are centered around these animals, commenting openly opens my family and our work to public scrutiny. Normally the park does not comment on sensationalized animal news stories or opinions of others but today since the large amount of messages I have received I felt it necessary to inform our followers with factual information. This is strictly for information of facts**** ****this camel accident in Tennessee did not occur at the park, nor does it have anything to do with our animals or our park.
